Tim Elbert of Four Seasons - The TiminatorTips From The Timinator

If April showers bring May Flowers, what do May flowers bring?

May flowers bring (of course) June bugs. Controlling insects in your yard and garden can be really easy though. If you haven’t done it already one application of Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone II will control insects in your lawns for the whole year. A similar product is available for trees and shrubs and is called Fertilome Liquid Soil Drench. Just mix it with water and pour it around the base of your plants for all season control. In the veggie garden and around your flowers you can spray the Natural Guard Neem Py. Made from derivatives of the neem tree and the painted daisy, this safe spray is effective against both insects and diseases. So don’t spend your whole summer at war with the insect world, take care of what’s bugging you now.

Hey dude, the future is so bright you ought to plant shade trees.

Ok, here we are at the beginning of summer and you are just now realizing that you should have planted that shade tree. Last year. Well, here are some suggestions for fast growth without the mess of poplars and willows. One of my favorites is the maple. There are some great new varieties available that are fast growing and have great fall color. Autumn fantasy and Autumn Blaze are even seedless—they don’t have those little whirly-bird gizmos. Birch are fast, too, and cast a nice, medium shade, allowing some light to penetrate. There are many other choices as well including some great flowering varieties but before you choose, bring us a picture of your area and some measurements so we can help you choose the best one for your yard.

Black Lace. Now that’s something everyone needs in their garden.

I’m talking about Black Lace elderberry. Got a container that needs a really dynamic plant in it? How about a densely shaded area or a hot, sunny location that needs sprucing up? Black lace elderberry is a unique plant that will grow in just about any condition. It’s finely cut black foliage is accented in late spring with large clusters of tiny pink flowers followed at times by small, purple-black edible berries. Wonderful for attracting birds and butterflies, yet it seems unbothered by the deer. Black lace elderberry makes a great backdrop for roses, adds color and texture to a perennial bed and sets off patios and entries nicely. It isn’t very often that you come across such a beautiful plant with such diverse uses, so add a little romance to your yard and plant one today.

This year, instead of running off to the tropics for the summer, bring the tropics home.

Creating a tropical look in your yard can be easy and fun. There are a lot of great plants that will grow here and give your yard that Hawaiian feel. Windmill palms are great around the pool or patio and are hardy down to 0 degrees. Liven up the shady areas with star jasmine and camellias. Another cool perennial with huge, tropical leaves is the Grecian Pattern Plant. Dark green leaves to 4 feet across and spikes of white and purple flowers make a nice statement under a tree or on the shady side of the house or garage. Canna lilies and wide bladed ornamental grasses work great in the sun, and everyone needs a hardy banana tree. Ok, I can't do anything about the summer heat but maybe I can help you forget it for a while.

Hope to see you soon! Tim
